Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary announced today that Jennifer “Jenny” Matheny, PhD, will join the school’s faculty as associate professor of Christian Scriptures this coming fall. A gifted scholar and teacher, Matheny will teach courses at Truett in Old Testament Studies and Hebrew.

Matheny holds a BA from Ozark Christian College (Joplin, MO), a MA in Theological Studies in Old Testament from Regent College (Vancouver, Canada), and a PhD from the University of Kent (Canterbury, England). She currently serves as associate professor of Old Testament at Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City; she has also taught at George Fox University, Multnomah University, and Manhattan Christian College. Matheny is the author of Judges 19-21 and Ruth: Canon as a Voice of Answerability. Additionally, she has written numerous articles for both academic and ecclesial audiences and is an active member of the Society of Biblical Literature and the Wesleyan Theological Society.

“I am thrilled that Dr. Jenny Matheny will be joining our faculty,” said W. Dennis Tucker, Jr., PhD, professor of Christian Scriptures and chair of the search committee. “She has established herself as a serious researcher, as evidenced by her most recent volume with Brill and a forthcoming volume with Oxford University Press, but also as one committed to writing on behalf of the Church, as her many missional publications reflect. Her research reflects the most recent methodological approaches in scholarship coupled with a careful reading of the biblical text. Students will quickly discover her passion for the classroom and her deep love of the Church, and this coupling will prove formative to their growth.”

Regarding the announcement of her appointment to Truett’s faculty, Matheny remarked, “I am honored and delighted to join the faithful scholar-teachers, staff, and students who make up the Truett community. I look forward to working within the interdisciplinary context of a R-1 institution with a deeply rooted theological commitment to the Church.”

In addition to her work as a professor and researcher at Nazarene Theological Seminary, Matheny serves as the Director of the Wynkoop Center for Women in Leadership, where she supports women in their callings by helping them to discover their ministry giftings. Matheny also teaches and preaches regularly in congregational and conference settings and has served in a variety of ministry contexts with her family including youth ministry, Church planting, and Church revitalization. As a Wesleyan scholar, Matheny will add appreciably to Truett Seminary’s recently formed and rapidly expanding Wesley House of Studies.

“Baylor’s Truett Seminary is widely and rightly known for rigorous academic instruction, intentional spiritual formation, and serious academic inquiry in service of the Church,” noted Dean Todd D. Still, PhD. “To add to our faculty a person of Dr. Jenny Matheny’s caliber, capacity, character, and commitments is an occasion for celebration. I am eager for the Truett family to get to know her. She is a warm and winsome Christian who is an engaging teacher, accomplished academic, and experienced ministry leader. Her coming to serve with and alongside us is a blessing for which we are most grateful.”
