Sports Ministry Program Alumni Testimonials
Distinctiveness
As a seminary embedded within a research university that also has major college athletics, the Truett Sports Ministry Program is uniquely positioned to develop and train Christian leaders in the sports world. There is no other place that offers the same combination of advanced theological and pastoral training with a special focus on sports, and with the added bonus of getting to do sports ministry in a successful D1 athletic program under the supervision of qualified sports chaplains.
Depth
The Sports Ministry Program provides robust theological training through which students are able to engage with the culture of sports as thoughtful, faithful, and responsible Christians. At Truett, solid theology meets practical ministry application in and through the context of sports. Students learn how to integrate faith into sports in ways that are applicable to other spheres of life as well (family, business, politics, etc.). And along with our own experts, students have the opportunity to meet and learn from guests ranging from former and current sports practitioners (like Coach for America’s Joe Ehrmann) to leading theologians (like Robert Ellis, author of The Games People Play).
Versatility
Students in the program receive opportunities to serve and intern in a variety of contexts, including Baylor Athletics, local churches, student ministries, sports ministries, and community non-profit organizations. They also get the chance to work as paid mentors at the Faith and Sport Institute’s summer retreat for high school student-athletes. Sports Ministry students at Truett Seminary are given practical pastoral training and experience that allow them to flourish as leaders in many different settings, whether as sports ministry professionals, pastors, coaches or administrators, community sports leaders, and more.
Community
Integral to the Sports Ministry Program is the formation of Christian intellectual and moral virtues that can only be practiced and developed in a community of learners. Students not only go through classes and wrestle with deep questions with the support and encouragement of their peers, but they also have opportunities to build deeper friendships outside of the classroom. At the beginning of the academic year, students, faculty, and staff in the program gather together for a “kick-off” event, in addition to hosting monthly occasions for students in the program to get together and share life.
