Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary has announced the forthcoming appointment of Angela H. Reed, Ph.D., as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs following the transition of W. Dennis Tucker, Jr., Ph.D. from the role on August 1, 2021.

“After having served skillfully and sacrificially for a second term as our seminary’s Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. W. Dennis Tucker, Jr. has chosen to relinquish these considerable administrative responsibilities so that he might focus more fully on teaching, research, and writing within our school. Meanwhile, Dr. Angela H. Reed, an admired professor, spiritual director, and able administrator both within and beyond the Truett community, has graciously accepted my invitation to serve in this strategic leadership role,” said Dean Todd D. Still, Ph.D. “I am looking forward to working with Dr. Reed in serving our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends even as I continue to appreciate, admire, and give thanks for the thoughtful, careful work that Dr. Tucker has done over many years to ensure and enhance the academic quality and reputation of our seminary. That one seminary would be blessed with two such capable people is a ‘double portion.’”

Dr. Tucker served as Truett’s Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 2007 to 2014 and then again from 2018 onward. During these years of service—to name but a few of his many accomplishments—Dr. Tucker oversaw the introduction of new joint degree programs, assisted in the launch of the Seminary’s Houston campus, contributed to a number of grant awards, and faithfully and effectively directed the Seminary’s academic services office. Looking toward the fall, Dr. Tucker will continue to serve as Professor of Christian Scriptures while working on the Job volume for the Tyndale Old Testament Commentary Series as well as a Psalms volume for the Word Biblical Commentary Series.

“At the conclusion of this year, I will have served Truett for 11 years as Associate Dean,” Dr. Tucker said. “It has been an honor and joy to support the mission of Truett in this role, but I believe it is time for me to focus my attention more directly on teaching and research. I look forward to working alongside my colleagues as we continue to prepare women and men for faithful ministry in the cause of Christ.”

“To say that Dennis Tucker has been a remarkable servant leader in his role as Associate Dean would be an understatement,” Dr. Reed said. “He was one of those essential pastoral persons who mentored and guided me when I first came to Truett, and he continues to provide truly wise council as a collaborative leader for all of our faculty, staff, and students. We are deeply grateful for his tireless efforts on our behalf, often working behind the scenes to create space for new initiatives, guide us through transitions, and keep all things running smoothly. These are big shoes to fill! With God’s help and the support of the Truett community, I look forward to learning and growing into this essential work.”

Dr. Reed joined the Truett faculty in 2010 and currently serves as Associate Professor of Practical Theology and Director of Spiritual Formation, in addition to leading the Seminary’s two-year Spiritual Direction Training Program. She earned her Ph.D. in Practical Theology, Christian Education, and Formation from Princeton Theological Seminary, her M.Div. from the University of Winnipeg, and her B.A. and B.Th. from Canadian Mennonite University in Manitoba, Canada.

Throughout the spring and summer, Dr. Reed will begin to assist Dr. Tucker in his Associate Dean duties to prepare for the full transition in August. The faculty, staff, and students of Truett Seminary are immensely grateful for the capable and committed service of Dr. Tucker and look forward with great excitement to the leadership of Dr. Reed.
