Truett Church Network, Compassion Leaders Strengthen Global Partnerships in Dominican Republic Visit
Last October, a group of pastors and ministry leaders affiliated with the Truett Church Network traveled to the Dominican Republic as part of an ongoing partnership between Baylor University and Compassion International. The trip aimed to strengthen relationships and explore how churches across the United States can more effectively engage in global ministry. During the trip, the group was based in Santo Domingo, where they visited several churches that partner with Compassion to provide child development programs. Each of the churches was led by Dominican pastors and served their surrounding communities through education, discipleship, and material support for children facing poverty.
According to participants, the visit offered a firsthand look at how Compassion operates through local congregations rather than external leadership. Jack Bodenhamer, assistant dean of external affairs at Truett Seminary, described the trip as a continuation of Baylor’s long-standing collaboration with Compassion and an example of the University’s broader mission. “This trip is just the latest example of how we can serve together to better engage this world,” Bodenhamer said. He connected the experience to Baylor’s strategic plan, Baylor in Deeds, particularly its emphasis on contributing to a “vibrant, caring, global community.” He added that the partnership reflects a vision of “Baylor Pro Mundo,” highlighting the University’s commitment to global engagement.
Participants also emphasized the significance of working alongside local churches. Terry Johnston, director of the Waco Regional Baptist Association, joined the trip and noted the accessibility of Compassion’s model for congregations in the United States. “As someone who works with Baptist churches in and around Waco of all shapes, sizes, and flavors, what I saw in Compassion International's work in the Dominican Republic is extremely relatable,” Johnston said. “Compassion is doing contextual work through local churches and making a difference for the children of Santo Domingo, as well as around the world.” Chris Curran, pastor of Southland Baptist Church in San Angelo, echoed that sentiment, reflecting on his long-term involvement with the organization. “After sponsoring a child through Compassion for more than 20 years, it was a true blessing to witness their work firsthand,” Curran said. “God is doing incredible things through Compassion, and it’s a joy and privilege to partner with them in His mission.”
The trip not only strengthened ties between Truett Seminary, Compassion International, and Texas Baptist churches but also highlighted the role of local congregations in addressing global poverty. Bodenhamer expressed hope that continued collaboration will expand opportunities for churches and individuals to participate in similar efforts worldwide.
