Truett Seminary Appoints Tish Harrison Warren as Inaugural C.S. Lewis Theological Writer-in-Residence
WACO, Texas (Jan. 21, 2026) – Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary announced today that Tish Harrison Warren has been appointed to serve as the inaugural C.S. Lewis Theological Writer-in-Residence in the Anglican Episcopal House of Studies.
In this fixed-term appointment, Warren will not only continue to give attention to her work as a writer and engage publicly at the intersection of Christian theology and contemporary culture, but she will also serve in a teaching and mentoring role designed to support Anglican and Episcopal students enrolled at Truett Seminary. In addition to teaching a May intensive-term course later this year with Fr. Matthew Aughtry, she will regularly be on Truett’s main campus in Waco to meet with and mentor students. She will also represent the Anglican Episcopal House at a variety of events both on and off campus. Additionally, Warren will offer stand-alone lectures at the Seminary and University on topics such as the theology of worship, the role of liturgy in the Christian life, writing as spiritual formation, spiritual memoir and testimony, and faith and imagination in the works of C.S. Lewis, Madeleine L’Engle, Flannery O’Connor, and other writers.
“Tish Harrison Warren is one of the most important contemporary voices in American evangelicalism,” said Elisabeth Rain Kincaid, PhD, JD, director of the Institute of Faith and Learning at Baylor and associate professor of ethics, faith, and culture at Truett. “In her writing and teaching, she combines a commitment to theologically informed cultural critique, personal formation, and commitment to the local church. Tish’s presence at Truett will help us lean more deeply into our historical commitment to equip students for gospel ministry while also strengthening our expanded efforts to form students to serve as lay leaders and ministers in Anglican and Episcopal contexts."
Warren is a priest in the Anglican Church in North America. She holds a BA from Wake Forest University and a MA from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. She is the author of several books, including Liturgy of the Ordinary (2018) and Prayer in the Night (2021), both of which were named Christianity Today’s Book of the Year. She also has written a weekly newsletter for The New York Times. Her highly anticipated book, What Grows in Weary Lands: On Christian Resilience, will appear in print in May of this year, published by Convergent Books.
In response to this announcement, Warren stated, “I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to serve as the C.S. Lewis Theological Writer-in-Residence for the Anglican Episcopal House at Truett. Since the first time I visited Truett Seminary a few years ago, I have been struck by the unique and vital intellectual and spiritual community it offers–a community that embodies a consistent commitment to theological depth, biblical fidelity, intellectual curiosity, intentional spiritual formation, prophetic witness, and transformational leadership in the Church and wider world. I was thrilled when Truett recently launched an Anglican Episcopal House, and I am eager to be part of its important work through teaching, mentoring students, and exploring the gifts, challenges, and rich beauty of the Anglican tradition–and indeed the broader ‘Great Tradition’ of the global and historic Church.”
The position bears the name of the twentieth-century British scholar, author, apologist, and writer, C.S. Lewis. The C.S. Lewis Estate graciously granted Baylor’s Truett Seminary permission to employ the name.
Regarding the addition of Warren to Truett’s Anglican Episcopal House, Malcolm Guite, poet, priest, and former Chaplain of Girton College at Cambridge, remarked, “I am delighted to see Baylor’s Truett Seminary’s newly formed Anglican Episcopal House of Studies welcoming Tish Harrison Warren as the C.S. Lewis Theological Writer-in-Residence. Like Lewis himself, Tish has been a voice for the Christian faith which is able to engage and speak winningly and persuasively to a secular audience in the public square through her work at The New York Times and beyond. The Seminary students will benefit immensely from her presence, and from her skills and experience as a writer and from her equally thoughtful and faithful witness to the Gospel.”
